My commute is a mix of biking, Muni bus, and walking — usually 35-50 minutes each way, often in fog, wind, or light rain. After dealing with heavy regular backpacks and clothes that failed me during 12-hour shifts, I’ve been dialing in a proper techwear loadout for the past six months.
This post is my current daily carry system. I’ll break down every piece, why it made the cut, what I removed because it was dead weight, and the small tweaks that improved comfort dramatically. Hoping to get feedback from other shift workers or heavy commuters.
My Current Daily Commute Loadout
Shell: Arc’teryx Beta LT (used, 3 years old)
Midlayer: Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hybrid Hoody
Base: Smartwool Merino 150 long sleeve + synthetic tee
Pants: Outlier Futureworks
Shoes: Salomon Speedcross 6 GTX
Bag: Able Carry Daily Plus 21L (with rain cover)
Total worn + carried weight on a normal day: ~4.1 kg (9 lbs). Down from 6.8 kg when I first started.

What I Carry Every Single Day
Work Essentials (must-haves for ER nurse):
15" work laptop + charger (in waterproof sleeve)
Stethoscope + small medical kit (gloves, pens, shears, snacks)
Two sets of scrubs in compression packing cube
Reusable water bottle (32oz Hydro Flask)
Power bank + cables
Wallet, keys, phone, badge
Small first aid kit + painkillers
Packable rain shell (backup)
Weather/Comfort Items:
Lightweight merino beanie + gloves (SF mornings are cold)
Sunglasses + small microfiber cloth
Collapsible umbrella (rarely used but saved me twice)
Total items: 14 core things. I used to carry 22+ and felt like a pack mule.
The Able Carry bag shines here. The quick-access side pockets let me grab my badge or phone without opening the main compartment, and the laptop sleeve is properly padded. The weight distribution with the sternum strap makes biking feel balanced even when loaded.
What I Removed and Why (The Weight Purge)
This was the hardest but most valuable part of refining my system.
Removed:
Heavy puffy jacket (replaced by Nano-Air — saves 380g)
Full-size umbrella (switched to packable — saves 420g)
Extra pair of shoes (not worth it)
Bulky camera (now use phone only)
Random “just in case” tools that never got used
Biggest lesson: If you haven’t used something in the last 30 days, it probably doesn’t belong in your daily carry. I dropped almost 2.7 kg by being ruthless.

How the Clothing System Supports the Loadout
The Beta LT shell is my MVP. It’s durable enough to wear while biking, has excellent hood adjustment for wind, and the pit zips prevent overheating during climbs in SF hills. I’ve worn it through 40+ rainy commutes and it still performs.
Outlier Futureworks pants are perfect for my needs — stretchy enough for biking and squatting to help patients, with deep secure pockets that actually hold my phone and wallet without them falling out when I sit. The water resistance handles splash from buses perfectly.
Layering is key in SF’s crazy microclimates. I start cold in the morning and warm up fast. The Nano-Air gives me the flexibility to adjust without carrying extra bulk.

What Still Bothers Me + Potential Upgrades
Even with optimization, a few pain points remain:
The backpack, while excellent, could use better side bottle access while biking.
My phone pocket on the pants sometimes shifts during long walks.
I’m considering switching to a sling for lighter days (under 10 items).
I’m also thinking about adding subtle reflective tape on the bag for night shifts.
